Today is ELLEN BURSTYN’s 80th birthday. She was a force in the 70’s, making films about average women coping with their demons…sometimes literally as in “The Exorcist”. She won an Oscar for “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.” and did one of the most beautiful; spiritual films I ever saw, “Resurrection”. She bounded back brilliantly to the forefront and a new generation of admirers with her courageous performance as an addict in ” Requiem For A Dream”, a role that should have won her another Oscar. However, I will always love her best in a role originally intended for Dorothy Malone, that of Cybill Shepard’s wistful, restless, sexy and middle-aged mother in Peter Bogdanovich’s “The Last Picture Show.” Happy Birthday, Brilliant Lady.
